Why Noction Flow Analyzer

What Teams Look For in a PRTG Alternative for Flow Analysis

PRTG is a capable general-purpose monitoring platform. But teams that need deep, dedicated flow analysis — without counting sensors or paying per monitored interface — tend to look for something different.

Purpose-Built for Flow Analysis

NFA is designed exclusively for NetFlow, IPFIX, sFlow, J-Flow, and NetStream analysis. Every feature, every view, and every alert is built around traffic intelligence — not adapted from a broad monitoring platform.

Flat Rate, No Sensor Counting

NFA starts at $299/month for networks generating up to 10,000 flows per second — with no per-device, per-interface, or per-sensor charges at that tier. PRTG licenses by the number of sensors, and in flow-heavy environments, sensor counts climb quickly.

Unlimited Devices & Interfaces

Monitor every router, switch, and firewall across your entire network without triggering a license upgrade. NFA places no cap on the number of devices, interfaces, or traffic sources you can ingest.

Unlimited User Accounts

Every engineer and NOC analyst gets their own login without adding cost. In PRTG, users access the same sensor-based setup — with NFA, you scale visibility across your whole team freely.

Unlimited Custom Dashboards

Build as many dashboards as your workflows require — per-site, per-customer, per-application tier, per protocol. There is no ceiling on dashboard count in NFA.

On-Premises, Your Data Stays Home

NFA installs on your own Linux server. Flow records — containing IPs, port data, and traffic volumes — never leave your network. No cloud dependency, no data residency concerns.

Full Protocol Depth, Every Vendor

NetFlow v5/v9, IPFIX, sFlow, J-Flow, NetStream — all protocols supported natively. Works with Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, Arista, MikroTik, Brocade, ZTE, Alcatel, and Vyatta out of the box.

BGP Routing Intelligence

NFA’s optional BGP add-on correlates flow data with BGP routing tables, enabling full AS_PATH analysis for peering decisions and transit cost optimization — functionality PRTG doesn’t offer natively.

Published, Upfront Pricing

NFA pricing is public, fixed, and available without a sales call. No multi-year subscription commitment required to access a predictable price. Annual and monthly options available.

The PRTG Sensor Count Problem

PRTG’s pricing is built on sensors — where one sensor monitors one specific value on one device. For example: the inbound traffic on a single switch port is one sensor, and the outbound traffic on that same port is another. CPU load, memory, disk — each metric on each device is a separate sensor.

In a network operations context, where you need to monitor traffic in and out on dozens or hundreds of interfaces, plus SNMP metrics per device, sensors accumulate fast. A 50-device network with 5 interfaces each, monitored bidirectionally with flow data, can consume 500 or more sensors before you’ve added a single server or application metric.

As your network grows, you don’t just cross a tier once — you may cross it multiple times, requiring repeated license upgrades. NFA has no sensor concept whatsoever. Monitor 10 interfaces or 10,000 — your license doesn’t change.

Example: 50-Device Network (PRTG)
50 devices × 5 interfaces × 2 (in/out NetFlow)500 sensors
50 devices × SNMP (CPU, memory, uptime)~150 sensors
Network-level ping/availability checks~50 sensors
Estimated total sensors required~700+
PRTG 500 license covers500 sensors only
Required license tierPRTG 1000 or higher
⚡ With NFA: same 50-device network, same flow coverage — from $299/month (up to 10k FPS). No sensor counting required.

Focused vs. General

Built Specifically for Flow Analysis. Not Adapted From Something Else.

The Right Tool for the Right Job.

PRTG is a powerful and respected monitoring platform used by hundreds of thousands of administrators worldwide — it can monitor servers, applications, virtual environments, IoT and OT devices, cloud services, and network infrastructure, all from a single installation.

But that breadth comes with trade-offs for teams whose primary need is deep traffic flow analysis. PRTG’s NetFlow, IPFIX, and sFlow capabilities are sensor-based — each monitored interface or traffic metric consumes part of your licensed sensor quota. Flow-specific analysis depth is constrained by the general-purpose architecture.

NFA is designed from the ground up to do exactly one thing: receive, store, analyze, and report on network flow data. Every feature — per-AS traffic breakdowns, BGP correlation, multi-protocol support, custom per-interface dashboards — exists because flow analysis demanded it, not because it was adapted from server or application monitoring.

Noction NFA
  • NetFlow / IPFIX / sFlow core architecture
  • BGP & AS_PATH correlation
  • Per-interface traffic dashboards
  • Top talkers, top protocols, top ports
  • Multi-vendor, multi-protocol out-of-box

Paessler PRTG
  • Servers, VMs, applications, cloud
  • Network devices & interfaces
  • IoT, OT, environmental sensors
  • Flow monitoring via sensor model
  • Excellent for IT infrastructure breadth
  • Better fit for enterprise IT generalists

Neither tool is “better” overall — the question is which one is the right fit for your primary use case. For deep, scalable flow analysis, NFA is purpose-built.

Stop Counting Sensors.

Start Monitoring Everything.

PRTG’s sensor model is logical for general infrastructure monitoring, where you choose exactly which aspects of which devices you want to watch. But in a dedicated flow analysis context — where you want to see traffic across every interface on every device — sensors get consumed quickly.

The result is that teams monitoring mid-size or large networks for flow data often find themselves bumping into their sensor ceiling, requiring a license tier upgrade. And because PRTG now requires 3-year subscription commitments with annual billing, even a single tier upgrade represents a multi-year cost increase.

scale without friction

Unlimited Everything.

Grow Without Worrying About Limits.

New Branch. New Devices.

Same License. Same Price.

Every time your network expands in PRTG — a new site, new devices, more interfaces to monitor — you consume more sensors. Add enough and you cross a tier, which means a license upgrade and a new billing level. In a 3-year subscription model, that upgrade affects the rest of your contract period.

With NFA, network growth has zero pricing consequences. Onboard a new data center, commission 50 new switches, give 10 new engineers their own monitoring dashboards — the invoice doesn’t move. This makes NFA particularly cost-stable for growing ISPs, expanding enterprises, and multi-site managed service providers.

Common Questions

Switching from PRTG to NFA:

Your Questions Answered.

Can NFA replace PRTG entirely, or should I run both?
That depends on your use case. PRTG is a broad-scope monitoring platform covering servers, applications, virtual environments, IoT, and more. NFA is a dedicated flow analyzer. If your primary monitoring need is network traffic visibility — understanding bandwidth usage, top talkers, protocol distributions, and traffic flows — NFA is a complete replacement for the flow analysis portion of what you use PRTG for. If you also rely on PRTG for server health, application monitoring, or SNMP polling across non-network infrastructure, you may want to continue using PRTG for those use cases alongside NFA for flow analysis.
How does NFA pricing compare to PRTG in practice?
NFA starts at $299/month (or $2,990/year) for networks generating up to 10,000 flows per second — with no per-device, per-interface, or per-sensor charges at that tier. Networks above 10,000 FPS are handled under custom pricing, so larger-volume deployments can still get a tailored quote. PRTG is licensed by sensor count — tiers range from PRTG 500 (around $2,149/yr) to PRTG 10000 (around $17,899/yr). For most mid-size networks focused on flow analysis, NFA is significantly more affordable — and unlike PRTG, its base price doesn’t escalate simply because you add more interfaces to monitor.
What flow protocols does NFA support?
NFA natively supports NetFlow v5, NetFlow v9, IPFIX, sFlow, Juniper J-Flow, and Huawei NetStream — the full range of flow export standards in use across enterprise and carrier-grade equipment. SNMP polling is also supported for interface utilization data. All protocols are included in the base license with no add-ons required. The optional BGP add-on enables routing table correlation for AS_PATH-level analysis.
Does NFA run on Windows like PRTG?
No — NFA installs on Linux, specifically CentOS or Ubuntu. This is actually an advantage for many network operations teams who prefer not to add a Windows Server licensing requirement to their monitoring infrastructure. NFA’s Linux deployment is straightforward, and the hardware requirements are modest — a standard commodity server is sufficient for most deployments. PRTG requires Windows Server and is designed for the Windows ecosystem.
What vendors and devices are supported?
NFA works with any device that exports standard flow data — it is not vendor-locked. Validated vendors include Cisco, Juniper, Huawei, Arista, Brocade, Alcatel, Vyatta, MikroTik, and ZTE, among others. If a device exports NetFlow, IPFIX, sFlow, J-Flow, or NetStream, NFA can receive and analyze it.
Is support included in the NFA license?
Yes — 24/7 technical support is included in every NFA license, including during the 30-day free trial. You can reach the Noction support team via email and the customer portal. Support is identical during the trial and in a paid subscription, so if you encounter configuration questions while evaluating NFA, the same technical team is available to help.
